Starter problems
When the starter starts developing problems, how do you know that this has nothing to do with the battery? There are instances when it will just click but not turn over at all. Has anyone ever experienced this?

I haven't had that particular problem yet, thank goodness, but I do think that you could do some basic troubleshooting. If the engine is not turning over then it's unlikely that it's an ignition problem.

try checking your battery voltage when it happens. also check for loose or dirty connections. speaking from a automotive background, starter circuits are a high amp circuit and the smallest amount of resistance can create problem. I would start there and if they check out look at the selonoid and try to jump it to see if the starter functions. If that all checks out it may be a flat spot in the starter. Again I have a automotive background. If you can find a shop manual to help flowchart the problem they work best

I have made a habit of constantly checking my bike for any loose connections. I even started doing this before understanding that these connections can cause numerous problems and I think for this single reason, I have never had any problem with my starter. From the experience with driving, I have always set the voltmeter to a range higher than the battery voltage. Does this still apply to motorcycles?
