Exclamation Farmington Hills Sams Club to become Harley-Davidson Dealership

A long-vacant Sam's Club store in Farmington Hills will be reborn later this year as a giant Harley-Davidson dealership.

The Farmington Hills Sam's Club on Haggerty is under renovatiosn to become a brand new HD dealership in the Motor City.

Here is the news from the Detroit Free Press

Motor City Harley-Davidson on Monday announced its $8 million plan to repurpose the old Sam's Club at 24800 Haggerty, which has sat empty since 2006.

The motorcycle dealership intends to start renovations in April and move into the building by late August, leaving its current location at 34900 Grand River in Farmington Hills. The dealership would fill 70,000 square feet of the 106,000-square-foot big box; it hopes to attract a brew pub restaurant and perhaps a gourmet market to fill the remaining space.

The new store will be about twice the size of Harley-Davidson's current location in a former three-story Acura dealership, which is now too small for the business's needs, said Craig Collins, the dealership's general manager and equity partner with owner Tom Celani.

"We want to become a destination," Celani said. "We want people to come and hang out."

The future location will feature indoor and outdoor gathering spots for groups of riders and a drive-in/ride-in outdoor movie setup during summer months. There will be on-site winter storage for up to 1,200 bikes, a significant increase.

The dealership plans to expand to 70 employees with the move from its current headcount of 50. It aims to sell 1,000 motorcycles this year, Celani said.

This is a good way to make use of an abandoned store. I hope it does translate to sales, even surpassing the target of 1000 motorcycles.
