View Full Version : Idle adjustment

My 98 FXDL seems to idle a little fast and I was wondering if the Tachometer on these bikes are fairly accurate? I adjusted it to what reads as just under 10 and it sounds better. What is the factory setting supposed to be?

I have no idea what factory setting might be, but I'd say if your ears like the adjustment then your engine probably does too. From what I've read it seems like a lot of stock tachs read on the high side. If you are getting a lot of bounce on the needle then I'd say the reading is fubar and it's time to put in a new instrument.

Thanks for the info my Tach doesn't bounce much and seems to be working fine I think your right though about the sound. It seems to sound better just under 10. and has that nice smooth potato potato patato sound that Harley-Davidson's are famous for.

I am not sure if this applies to all bikes but the factory default is normally around 4 pulses per revolution. I agree with Tee about tachs reading on the higher side.
